Greek Lingo
Active
A fully initiated member of a sorority.
Alumna
A member of a sorority who has graduated from college.
Bid
A formal invitation to affiliate with a sorority.
Chapter
A branch of a national or international sorority; the local organization.
Greeks
Sorority and fraternity members.
Initiation
The traditional ritual which brings the new member into full membership.
Interfraternity Council
A representative governing body of all North American Interfraternity Conference member fraternities. Also called IFC.
Legacy
A prospective member whose relative is an alumna or active member of a certain sorority/fraternity. Usually refers to a daughter, sister, or
granddaughter.
Mixer
A fraternity/sorority social get-together.
National Pan-Hellenic Council
A representative governing body of all of historically Black-Greek fraternities and sororities. Also called NPHC.
Panhellenic Council
A representative governing body of all National Panhellenic Conference member sororities and fraternities.
Philanthropy
The non-profit organizations to which fraternities and sororities contribute their time and money.
Pin (two types)
The active pin or badge which signifies an active member or the new member pin which is the insignia that designates a new member in a particular group.
Pledge / New Member
The newest members of the chapter, being educated towards active membership.
Potential Member
An undergraduate prospective member who is participating in recruitment activities.
Quota
The number of new members each sorority may accept during formal recruitment.
Recruitment/ Rush
The activity by which members and potential members get acquainted.
Ritual
The traditional secret ceremonies.
Sister
A term used by active members of a sorority when referring to each other.
